Changing your baby's diaper is a wonderful skill that a parent should learn to master. It is also a part of the bonding activities that the parent and the baby can share. It is one way of showing your tender loving care for your baby.

Changing diaper should not make it as a responsibility only of the parents, but should be part of the loving regimen of care that a parent could give his baby. You don't need to learn to master it as long as you're putting it into practice everyday. Below are some hints to consider in changing your baby's diaper.

When changing your baby's diaper, you will need some baby's essentials like a clean diaper (cloth or disposable), baby wipes, a diaper rash cream and ointment, set of clothes for him to change just in case, and a plastic bag to dispose of soiled diapers.

What are the steps to follow in changing your baby's diaper?

You can change your baby's diaper on a changing table or any flat surface with a changing pad or towel. Be sure to have all you need within your reach. Never leave your child unattended even in an instant.

Lay your baby on a flat surface or changing table. Remove the soiled diaper by lifting the adhesive side tabs. Secure the soiled diaper before putting it in a plastic bag to avoid unnecessary leakage.

Next, using the baby wipes or washcloth dampened with water, clean the genital area by wiping it from front to back. Never wipe from the opposite direction because you might spread the dirt into his genitals and thus cause urinary tract infection and rashes.

Apply some diaper cream to protect him from irritants and possible diaper rash. Then place a clean diaper under your baby and secure both adhesive ends to the side. Make sure that the diaper fits exactly to the baby to avoid leakage.

After securing the diaper, pat your baby dry to eliminate excessive moisture that can lead to infections. Check that the diaper is fit; it should be snug but not tight. If necessary, change his clothes as well for him to be comfortable.

After changing your baby's diaper and disposing the soiled diaper, wash your hands thoroughly and pat it dry.

To prevent your baby from possible skin infections, be sure to change diapers every now and then. Avoid your baby's skin from prolonged contact of wet and soiled diapers.

Many first time parents are surprised by the volume of diapers their baby use throughout the day. It always recommended having plenty of diapers at hand.
